CASA Alerts

CASA Alerts is a mobile app developed by the CASA Engineering Research Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The app aims to improve user-centric, context-aware severe weather forecasts and warnings using CASA's City Warn™ platform. It delivers weather information and surveys to users on mobile phones to enhance the understanding of the best ways to deliver weather information for thunderstorms, tornados, hail, high winds, and floods.

The functionality and user experience of the app vary depending on the user. CASA WX users in collaboration with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the National Weather Service receive detailed radar data, severe weather warnings, hyper-local alerts, and storm spotter reports based on their preferences and locations of interest. Periodic feedback is requested from these users through mobile phone surveys.

Other users participate in surveys that explore their perceptions of severe weather risks. These users may receive different types of weather information or no weather information at all to gather insights into the current practices of severe weather information usage.

CASA's work has been supported by various National Science Foundation grants, including Hazards SEES, Building innovation Capacity, FIA-NP, and FIA programs. Academic participants include the University of Massachusetts, Colorado State University, and the University of Delaware.
