Local Haze
Local Haze is a mobile application that provides users with outdoor Air quality data gathered from various sources. It offers the feature of "at-a-glance" air quality information through Home Screen widgets, as well as the option to subscribe to notifications for significant changes in air quality. The app retrieves air quality data from sensors such as PurpleAir, Sensor.Community, uRADMonitor, AirNow, and the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, users can share sensor maps displaying air quality readings worldwide.
Local Haze focuses on the measurement of particulate matter (PM) and specifically displays the level of PM 2.5 particles, which are considered the most detrimental to health. The app utilizes the guidelines developed by the World Health Organization and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for safe air quality.
To enhance user experience, Local Haze allows users to add a widget to their phone's Home Screen, providing a snapshot of their preferred air quality sensor. Furthermore, subscribers can set notifications to receive alerts when there are changes in air quality.
The app displays air quality data using the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI) and provides a confidence rating for each sensor reading. This rating is a unique feature of Local Haze and considers factors such as sensor maintenance and data freshness. The app categorizes air quality conditions into different levels, ranging from Good to Hazardous, each represented by a visual indicator.
