Crowsflight
Crowsflight is a GPS compass app that provides mapless navigation by combining location data (GPS) with a compass. It offers an intuitive way to navigate without the need for instructions, maps, or paths to follow. The app only uses GPS for navigation, so a data connection is not required once the destination is loaded. It is particularly useful for exploring foreign cities.
The main view of Crowsflight displays distance in metric or imperial units and allows users to drop a marker at their current position. The heading pointer changes width based on compass and GPS accuracy.
The list view allows users to search for a new destination by address or placename. Latitude and longitude can also be inputted manually. The app supports searching with what3words offline. The location list view shows the relative distance to each location, allowing users to compare places. The location list can be rearranged by long-pressing the row. The current location can be shared via email, and users can launch Maps for turn-by-turn directions.
The map view displays all saved locations and allows users to select and adjust them by dragging and dropping pins. New locations can be saved on the map by long-pressing.
Some other features of Crowsflight include offline functionality (except for searching), support for custom URL schemes for sharing destinations, backup of locations through iTunes file sharing, and the ability to save and sync locations to iCloud.
The Apple Watch version of the app offers the same pointing interface as the iPhone app and allows users to select locations added on their phone. Users can swipe to navigate between locations on the watch. The app also provides a pro tip for users whose running app keeps taking over as the frontmost app on the Apple Watch.
It is important to note that Crowsflight is not intended for driving due to potential magnetic interference in cars. For driving, it is recommended to use turn-by-turn directions instead.
