Bookends
Bookends is a reference management app available on iOS devices, including iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. It allows users to search various databases such as Amazon, Google Books, JSTOR, and PubMed, among others, to find references and download them, including PDFs, to their personal library. The app also offers a built-in browser for accessing websites and supports organizing references into groups. Users can annotate PDFs within the app and email references to themselves or others. Autofill features for references are available, and barcodes can be scanned.
An important feature of Bookends is its syncing capability through iCloud, allowing users to access their libraries and attachments on various iOS devices and the Mac version of Bookends. This ensures seamless access to references and sources from different locations.
However, the app has limitations in its free version. These include a maximum of 20 references in search results, a limit of 50 references in the local database, watermarked PDFs when annotating on iOS devices, and ads being shown. To remove these restrictions, users must make an in-app purchase.
In addition to the standard version, which costs $9.99, there is a Pro Features Yearly Subscription available as a separate in-app purchase for $9.99. This subscription provides cloud sync of references and attachments, multi-library support, and unlimited barcode scans. The subscription is renewable on a yearly basis and can be managed through iOS settings. If the subscription is not renewed, the Pro Features will be disabled.
Cancellation of the current subscription is not allowed during the active subscription period.
