Xasteria: Astronomy Weather
Xasteria is an iOS app that was originally created to provide users with the ASTRO weather forecast from the service 7Timer. It offers worldwide coverage and a high-performing astro-seeing model, making it a valuable tool for stargazers.
In addition to the ASTRO weather forecast, Xasteria also offers quick access to various weather resources and tools, including Clear Sky Charts, Clear Outside, Meteoblue, Windy, Astrospheric, Sat24.com, water vapor satellite images, and light pollution maps. The app also displays ISS and bright satellite passes for the user's location, with data sourced from heavens-above.com.
The primary forecast source used by Xasteria is 7Timer, which is based on the NOAA/NCEP-based Global Forecast System (GFS). This model provides a forecast for the entire globe with a resolution of approximately 20km at 3-hour intervals. The app presents a wide range of data, including sun/moon rise/set times, moon phase, cloud cover, astronomical seeing, atmospheric transparency, temperature, humidity, rain/snow, atmospheric instability, wind, and wind direction.
Xasteria offers three visualization modes for viewing the data: 7Timer! ASTRO graphics, color-stripe graphics similar to other astro-forecast services, and a raw text mode. The app supports English, Greek, and French languages, and the author welcomes collaboration for translating the app into other languages.
Xasteria is an ad-free app that aims to support the funding of the 7Timer service. Users can opt for Xasteria Plus, which provides access to non-free weather sources and offers additional features like night vision mode, iPhone landscape view, lunar calendar, and location management.
